The Splitter
<Submission for Game Maker's Toolkit GameJam June 13 2021 https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2021
You're The Splitter, a slime of sorts that has fused 2 energies together and keeps them at a balance, Yin and Yang, Black and White, Darkness and Light.
!!Use them to solve puzzles and get through the game!!
Each of your halves can walk through the opposite color of it's own (Yin (Black) can walk through white but can stand on black. Yang (White) can walk through black but can stand on white)
Controls:
- A/S / Arrow left / Arrow Right - Movement
- Space / W/ Up Arrow - Jump
- E / F / Numpad 0 / Control - Split (into 2)
- Tab / Numpad Enter - Switch which character you're controlling
SPOILER (Controls but a spoiler)
- Q / Numpad 1 - Teleport call
Please Note (known bugs):
- There are some bugs still in the game, primarily with some collision after you've used teleport on the 2 guys. I couldn't get those fixed in time for submission.
- Additionally, the splitting and merging is a little visually glitchy but mechanically functional.
- The camera doesn't stick to white after initial split, requires switching to controlling black and then back to white for it to function and follow character properly.
- Lastly, the game has no 'end', only a 'game over' if you let your 'balance' run out.

Really nice concept! The switching controls between two characters to accomplish tasks is familiar, but the added mechanic of rejoining them before a timer runs out is cool and challenging! I personally had a hard time with the platforming challenges- the edges of platforms are slippery? But the concept is there, and I can see myself having a lot of fun with a more polished version.
I made the char collision round to make the character 'slide off' the edges under physics :D making it a little harder.
Glad you liked it, thanks for the feedback. I'm considering fixing the bugs and collision issues (post teleport) for a post jam version, not sure if i'll have the time.
Very interesting and fun mechanics. Lot of potential for a "full game". After some struggle with the known bugs and understanding the game, I visited all of the places.
Platforming felt little bit too tight and brutal. I fell a lot.
Also this fits the theme well. Although not explored much I really liked how when separated everything slowly switches. It covering the whole screen and hiding platforms was bit jarring tho!
Awesome to hear such nice feedback. Thanks a lot for taking your time commenting :D
yeah, I'm considering a post jam version after fixing the bugs and doing some neat level designs.
My apologies for making it a little too hard Q_Q
Aye, the switching is a gradient shader changing alpha based on the current balance. Initially i thought of just having it become more dense as you run out of balance energy and just be the que for game over - can't see anymore, but then i played around with it some more and made it go full density, but then go in reverse, switching the color scheme and that looked really cool so i kept it
I liked the gameplay mechanic, i just got really lost, nice game, nice use of the theme
Thanks :D yeah i've been told the levels are confusing, sorry about that Q_Q something to address in post jam version I guess.
Glad you liked it though
I love your gameplay mechanic it quite makes me feel nostalgia in flash game.
Yesss! Shift was it? I felt the same way :D didn't even think of it until I had the core gameplay working then I was like- oh dang, I subconsciously made a game similar to shift lol That game was so much fun
